What Happens If You Seal It

A trapped squirrel does not settle. It will chew — at timber, at fascia from the inside, at plastic pipework and at cable — with considerably more determination than a squirrel that can come and go. The damage escalates quickly.

And if it cannot get out, it dies in the roof. A dead squirrel in a loft or a ceiling void is a serious smell for several weeks and often has to be located and removed through the ceiling.

The Timing Problem in Spring and Midsummer

Grey squirrels have two main breeding periods, roughly late winter and midsummer. Sealing a loft during either can trap dependent young in a drey while the adult is outside.

That is both an animal welfare problem and a practical one: the young die in the insulation. Where there is any sign of a drey or young, the work is timed around it rather than pushed through.

The Legal Position

Grey squirrels are an invasive non-native species in the UK. They cannot lawfully be released once caught, and they cannot be relocated to a park or woodland — releasing one is an offence, whatever the intention behind it.

They must also be dealt with humanely, and traps have to be checked at proper intervals. The Right Order

Survey and identify the entry points. Trap and remove the animals, checking at proper intervals. Confirm the roof space is clear — which means an actual check, not an assumption based on the noise stopping.

Only then proof: mesh, metal or timber repair at the openings, plus cutting back the branches and routes that gave access. Rodent proofing is £180 for up to an hour and covers rats, mice and squirrels.

The One-Way Exclusion Question

A one-way door or exclusion device that lets an animal leave and not return sounds like the answer, and it has its place. But it is only appropriate outside the breeding periods and when it is certain there are no dependent young inside.

Get that wrong and you have sealed young into a loft with the adult outside, which is the worst version of this. That judgement is the reason to have somebody look rather than to order something and fit it.
