How Quickly Can a Cockroach Problem Become an Infestation?
Faster than anything else we deal with domestically. The arithmetic is unforgiving, and it is the reason we push people not to wait and see.
The Egg Case Is the Whole Story
A German cockroach egg case holds roughly thirty to forty eggs, and a single female produces several of them over her life. She carries the case until shortly before it hatches, which protects it from almost anything applied to the room.
So each female represents not one insect but well over a hundred, arriving in batches, on a schedule you cannot see. That is why a population appears to be stable and then is suddenly not.
The Cycle Time
In a warm kitchen, egg to breeding adult runs in a matter of weeks to a couple of months. Central heating means that continues year-round rather than pausing over winter.
Generations therefore overlap. By the time you have a visible problem you have adults, nymphs at several stages and egg cases all present at once, which is exactly why a single application rarely finishes it and why monitors matter.

What That Looks Like in Practice
Weeks one to four: one or two insects arrive, usually in packaging, a delivery, a second-hand appliance or from a neighbouring flat. Nothing visible.
Months two and three: droppings appear along the kickboard and cupboard edges, sometimes a smell. Months four to six: first sightings, usually at night. Beyond that: daytime sightings, spread into appliance casings and the unit voids, and in a flat, movement into neighbouring properties.
Why Waiting Costs More Than Money
The price does not change — £190 for a flat, £240 for a house — but the time does. A problem caught at the droppings stage is generally straightforward. The same problem a year later takes longer, needs more visits, and in a block may have stopped being solvable by one household.
For a food business it is worse again, because by then it is not only a pest problem but an inspection and reputation problem.
The One Thing That Slows It Down
Ringing at the droppings stage rather than the sighting stage. Droppings like coarse black pepper along an edge, shed skins in a crack, an egg case wedged behind something, or an oily musty smell in a closed kitchen — any of those is enough to act on.
Do not spray in the meantime. It scatters the population into new harbourage, spreads it further through the property, and makes the gel bait that actually works less effective when it does go down.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many eggs are in one case?
Roughly thirty to forty, and a female produces several. One insect is never one insect.
How fast does it grow?
Egg to breeding adult in weeks to a couple of months in a warm kitchen, year-round.
Should I spray while I wait for a visit?
No. It scatters them into new harbourage and makes the treatment less effective.
