What Are the First Signs of a Cockroach Infestation?
Seeing one is rarely the first sign — it is usually about the fourth. Here is the order things actually turn up in.
First: The Smell
An established population produces a distinctive smell — oily, musty, faintly sweet — that people usually put down to drains, damp or the bin. It is strongest in a closed kitchen first thing in the morning.
On its own it proves nothing, but combined with anything else on this list it is a strong indicator, and it is often the thing a visitor notices before the occupant does.
Second: Droppings
Like coarse black pepper or fine coffee grounds, collected along edges rather than scattered — the top edge of a kickboard, the inside lip of a cupboard, the corner where two surfaces meet, the top of a wall unit.
Larger cockroaches leave darker cylindrical droppings with ridges along them. Either way, droppings in a line along an edge is the signature, because that is where they run.

Third: Shed Skins and Egg Cases
Cockroaches moult repeatedly as they grow, so shed skins accumulate in and around harbourage. They look like pale hollow versions of the insect and they break up easily.
Egg cases are the most useful find of all: small, brown, purse-shaped, and often wedged under a shelf lip, behind an appliance or inside a cupboard hinge recess. An egg case proves breeding on the premises rather than an insect that arrived in a delivery.
Fourth: Seeing One
And by the time you do, the population is generally well established, because cockroaches are built to avoid being seen. A daytime sighting is a worse sign than a night-time one, since it usually means the harbourage is crowded.
One insect seen once, with none of the above, can genuinely be a hitchhiker in a box or a bag — but it is worth a proper look rather than an assumption.
Why Speed Matters Here More Than With Most Pests
A German cockroach egg case holds around thirty to forty eggs and the cycle from egg to breeding adult can run in a couple of months in a warm kitchen. That is the fastest escalation of anything we deal with domestically.
A problem caught at the droppings stage is a straightforward treatment. The same problem six months later has usually spread into appliance casings, the void behind the units and, in a flat, into the neighbouring properties. The price is £190 for a flat and £240 for a house either way; what changes is how long it takes to finish.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does a cockroach problem smell like?
Oily and musty, slightly sweet. Strongest in a closed kitchen first thing.
What is the most useful thing to find?
An egg case — small, brown and purse-shaped. It proves breeding rather than an arrival.
I saw one. Is that an infestation?
Not necessarily, but check for droppings, skins and egg cases before assuming it was a hitchhiker.
