Bed Bug Treatment · Bexley
What Are the First Signs of Bed Bugs in a Bedroom?
They appear in a fairly predictable order, and the first stage shows nothing at all. Knowing the sequence is what lets you catch it early.
Stage One: Nothing
A bed bug infestation almost always starts with a very small number of insects arriving in luggage, a second-hand item or a delivery. For the first few weeks there is nothing to see and nothing to feel — too few bugs, too little feeding, and not everyone reacts to bites at all.
That silent period is why people are so sure it "came out of nowhere". It did not. It was there for weeks before it announced itself.
Stage Two: Bites Somebody Blames on Something Else
The first real sign is usually bites, and the first response is usually a wrong diagnosis: a new washing powder, an allergy, the cat, mosquitoes, or a heat rash. Bed bug bites often appear in a rough line or small cluster on skin that was uncovered in bed — arms, shoulders, neck, ankles.
Two things make bites unreliable on their own. Reactions can take days to appear, so the bite you are looking at is not from last night; and some people never react visibly at all, which is how one person in a household is bitten and nobody believes them.

Stage Three: Spotting on the Bedding
This is the first sign you can actually verify. Small dark spots on the sheet, particularly near the top edge of the mattress and along the piping seam, where a bug has fed and digested. They look like a fine felt-tip dot and they smudge if you dab them with a damp tissue.
Look along the whole seam, all the way round, and check the mattress label and the underside of the piping. This is the point where you stop guessing.
Stage Four: Skins, Then Insects
Shed skins come next — translucent, empty, bug-shaped shells, most often in the frame joints and behind the headboard. They mean bugs have been growing there for some time, so finding skins is finding an established population rather than an arrival.
Live bugs are the last thing most people see. Flat, oval, reddish-brown, about the size of an apple pip when fed. If you are seeing them without looking for them, the population is well up.
The Point at Which to Ring
Spotting on the seam is enough. You do not need to see an insect, and waiting until you do costs you money — the first room is £220 and each additional room is £120, and an infestation left long enough to spread to a second room has just added £120 to your bill.
One thing not to do while you wait: do not move to the spare room or the sofa. That is the single commonest way a one-room job becomes a two-room job.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I have bed bugs without bites?
Yes. Some people never react visibly, which is why one person in a household is bitten and nobody else is.
What is the first thing I can actually check?
Dark spotting along the piping seam of the mattress. It smudges with a damp tissue.
Should I sleep elsewhere until it is treated?
No. Moving spreads it and can add a room to the job.
