Wasp Nest Treatment · Bexley
Can You Leave a Wasp Nest Alone Until Winter?
Sometimes, yes — and we will tell you when. Colonies die off naturally in autumn and the same nest is never reused, so leaving one is a legitimate option in the right circumstances.
What Happens If You Do Nothing
A colony founded in spring grows through the summer, peaks in late summer, produces new queens and males in early autumn, and then dies. The workers die off, the old queen dies, and the new queens leave to overwinter elsewhere.
The nest is then finished permanently. Wasps never reuse a nest the following year, so an empty nest in a loft in November is an ornament, not a problem. It does not need removing unless you want it gone.
When Leaving It Is Reasonable
If it is late in the season — October onwards — and the nest is somewhere nobody goes, leaving it is usually the sensible call. A nest in a far corner of a garden, at the top of a tall tree, or in a shed you do not use until spring.
If you ring us in late autumn about a nest like that, we will say so rather than take your £90. There is no sense charging for something that is about to end on its own.

When It Is Not
Anywhere near a door, a window, a path, a washing line, a play area or a bin. Anywhere someone has to work — a loft you need to get into, a shed you use daily. And any nest at a property with someone who reacts badly to stings, where the calculation is different entirely.
Also: any nest found before about August. That has months of growth ahead of it, and a nest you can ignore in June is one you cannot ignore in September — a mature nest can hold several thousand wasps.
The Late-Season Problem Nobody Expects
Wasps get worse in September, not better. Once the colony stops producing brood, the workers lose their job and their sugar supply and start foraging for themselves — which is why they suddenly appear round bins, fallen fruit, drinks and pub gardens, and why they seem bolder and more aggressive.
So "it will die off soon" is true and is not always a comfort. The last few weeks are often the most difficult ones to live with.
If You Do Leave It
Keep away from the entrance and out of the flight line. Do not block it, spray it or knock it down — all three make wasps defensive and can push them into the building. Keep windows on that side shut on warm days and keep the loft hatch closed.
And if it changes — more traffic, wasps indoors, activity near a door — ring. It is £90 fixed and guaranteed whenever you decide, and there is no penalty for having waited.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will the nest be used again next year?
No. Wasps never reuse a nest. Once the colony dies the nest is finished permanently.
Is it ever fine to leave one?
Yes — late in the season, somewhere nobody goes. We will tell you if that is your situation.
Do wasps get worse in September?
Usually. Once brood-rearing stops, the workers forage for themselves and become far more noticeable.
