Ant Control · Bexley
Why Does Killing the Ants You Can See Not Solve the Problem?
Because the ants you can see are a rounding error. The colony that matters is underground and is not affected by anything that happens on your kitchen floor.
You Are Looking at the Foragers
Only a small proportion of a colony forages at any one time. The rest — the great majority — are underground tending brood, maintaining the nest and looking after the queen.
So the column across your worktop is not the ant population. It is the delivery service. Killing it removes the delivery drivers and leaves the warehouse untouched.
The Queen Is the Whole Problem
A colony persists because a queen keeps laying. Workers are replaceable and continuously replaced; a mature nest can produce them faster than you can kill them.
Which means any approach that cannot reach the queen cannot end the problem, no matter how effective it looks on the surface. That is the single most important thing to understand about ants.

Why Spraying Makes It Take Longer
A household spray kills the ants present and destroys the pheromone trail with it. The colony re-routes, and a week later there is a column somewhere slightly different.
It also actively works against the thing that does succeed. Gel bait relies on foragers surviving long enough to carry it home and share it, so a sprayed surface is a surface where bait cannot work. People who have sprayed for weeks before ringing us have usually made the job slower rather than easier.
What Actually Reaches the Queen
Slow-acting gel bait, taken up by the foragers and distributed through the colony by trophallaxis — ants feeding each other mouth to mouth. It reaches the workers you never see, the brood and eventually the queen.
The speed is the point. Bait that killed instantly would never get past the first ant. The delay is what makes it work, which is why an effective treatment looks like nothing is happening for a couple of days.
What You Should Do While It Works
Leave the trail alone. Do not clean it, do not spray it, do not move the bait. It feels wrong and it is the single most useful thing you can do.
Remove competing food instead — the residue under the units, pet bowls left down, sticky jars — so the bait is the most attractive thing available. Then wait. Once the colony is gone, clean the whole run with hot soapy water so nothing follows the old trail.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many ants am I actually seeing?
A small fraction. Most of the colony is underground and never leaves it.
Why should I not clean the trail during treatment?
The trail is what carries the bait home. Break it and you break the treatment.
Why does the bait seem slow?
Deliberately. If it killed on contact it would never reach the queen.
