Can Carpet Beetles Damage Clothes and Furniture as Well as Carpets?
Yes, and clothing often suffers worse than carpet does. Anything of animal origin is food, and the things we store are exactly the things they want.
What Counts as Food
Keratin: wool, cashmere, silk, fur, feather, animal hair, leather, and felt. Also dried insect remains, animal hair in a vacuum bag, and pet bedding.
Cotton, linen and synthetics are not food on their own — but a synthetic garment blended with wool is, and a cotton shirt soiled with sweat or food can be damaged incidentally where the residue is.
Why Stored Clothing Suffers Most
It is undisturbed for months, it is dark, and it is often put away without being washed. Body oils, perspiration and food residue make wool considerably more attractive, and larvae feed preferentially on soiled areas.
Which is why damage in a jumper is so often at the cuffs, the collar and the underarms rather than randomly across it — that is where the residue is. It is a recognisable pattern once you have seen it.

Furniture and Furnishings
Upholstery with natural fibre, particularly along the seams and beneath the base fabric where nothing is disturbed. Wool blankets and throws. Sheepskin and hide rugs, which are frequently destroyed from the underside. Feather cushions and duvets. Curtains with wool content, at the hem.
Also the things nobody thinks of: felt on the underside of ornaments, piano felts, taxidermy, and the wool in an old carpet underlay.
How to Protect What You Are Keeping
Wash or dry-clean woollens before storing, always. That single step removes most of what attracts them. Store in sealed containers rather than cardboard boxes or open shelves — a lidded plastic box is far better than a suit carrier.
Take things out and look at them twice a year, and vacuum wardrobe floors and drawer backs when you do. Cedar and lavender have limited effect and neither will stop an established population; treat them as pleasant rather than protective.
If You Find Damage
Isolate the affected items in sealed bags so it does not spread while you deal with it. Freezing at a domestic freezer temperature for a couple of weeks kills all stages in small items; hot washing works for anything that can take it.
Then find the source, because damaged clothing is usually a symptom. Search the wardrobe floor, the drawer backs and under the bed, then look in the roof space — a bird nest or stored wool up there is the commonest source of a recurring problem. Treatment is £180 for the first room and £60 for each additional one.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do they only eat carpets?
No. Wool, silk, fur, feather and leather are all food, and stored clothing often suffers worse.
Why is the damage at the cuffs and collar?
Body oils and residue. Larvae feed preferentially on soiled areas.
Do cedar blocks or lavender work?
Not reliably. Washing before storage and sealed containers do far more.
