Why Are Carpet Beetles Often Found Around Windows?
Because they are trying to get out, not in. Which makes a windowsill full of beetles one of the most useful pieces of evidence in this trade.
Adults Are Leaving, Not Arriving
Adult carpet beetles do not damage textiles. They feed on pollen and nectar, so once they emerge they head for the outdoors — and they navigate towards light.
A window is the brightest thing in a room, so that is where they end up, often dead on the sill in numbers. It looks like an invasion from the garden. It is the opposite.
Which Tells You Where They Hatched
Because adults are heading out from where they emerged, the room with the beetles on the sill is the room with the larvae, or is directly below where the larvae are.
That is genuinely valuable. It converts a vague "we have carpet beetles somewhere" into a specific room to search, and it is why we ask which windowsills rather than which rooms have damage.

Why It Is So Often an Upstairs Back Bedroom
This is the pattern we see more than any other, and it points upwards. A bird’s nest in the eaves, a dead bird in a soffit or a boarded flue, or a loft holding old wool, feathers, blankets and bedding — any of those produces larvae year after year.
The adults emerge in the roof space, work down through a gap at the ceiling or around a light fitting into the room below, and head for its window. So the beetles are on the sill of a room that has nothing wrong with it.
Why It Happens in Spring
Emergence is seasonal and triggered by rising temperature, so the sills fill up over a few weeks in spring and then stop. People conclude it resolved itself.
It did not. It went back to being larvae somewhere, and the same thing happens the following April. A problem that recurs every spring in the same room is close to a diagnosis on its own.
What to Do With the Information
Search that room properly: wardrobe floor, backs of drawers, under the bed, carpet edges over the gripper, and under any rug. Look for banded bristly larvae and, more often, their shed skins.
Then go up into the loft above and check for nesting material, feathers, a dead bird or old woollens. Removing that is what stops it recurring; treating the room alone is a yearly expense. Treatment is £180 for the first room and £60 for each additional one.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are they coming in from the garden?
No, they are trying to get out. They emerged inside and are heading for the light.
What does a windowsill full of beetles tell me?
That the larvae are in that room or directly above it.
Why every spring?
Emergence is temperature-triggered. If it recurs annually, the source is usually in the roof space.
