Why Do Carpet Beetles Keep Appearing After Cleaning?
Because cleaning reaches the places you can get to, and carpet beetles live in the places you cannot. Recurrence is almost always a source that has never been found.
Cleaning Reaches the Wrong Places
Vacuuming a carpet takes the surface. Larvae are down in the pile, under the gripper at the room edge, in the underlay, under the furniture and inside the wardrobe floor — and a standard vacuum head passes over all of it.
Washing textiles deals with the item washed and nothing else. So a thorough clean genuinely reduces numbers, visibly, for a few weeks, and then the population recovers from the parts that were never touched. That is the cycle people describe as "they keep coming back".
The Life Cycle Is Long
The larval stage runs for months and can extend beyond a year in a cool room. So a clean in March and adults on the windowsill the following April is not a new infestation — it is the same one, on schedule.
That length is also why judging success after a few weeks is meaningless. The population is measured in generations, not in what you saw last Tuesday.

The Source That Is Never in the Room
This is the answer in most recurring cases. A bird’s nest in the eaves, a dead bird in a soffit or a boarded flue, or a loft holding old wool, feathers, blankets and bedding. Any of those produces larvae year after year regardless of what happens to the carpet below.
Adults emerge up there, work down through a gap at a ceiling or a light fitting, and head for the nearest window. So the beetles turn up on the sill of a room that has nothing wrong with it, and cleaning that room achieves nothing at all.
The Other Places That Survive a Clean
Inside a wardrobe floor and the backs of drawers. A box of stored woollens under a bed. An airing cupboard with old blankets in it. Sheepskin or hide rugs, damaged from underneath. Felt pads under furniture. An old vacuum cleaner bag. And the underlay, if it is felt or hair.
Each of those is capable of maintaining a population indefinitely while the room around it looks immaculate.
What to Do Instead of Cleaning Again
Establish which room the adults are appearing in, because that is the room the larvae are in or below. Then search that room properly — wardrobe floor, drawer backs, under the bed, carpet edges over the gripper, under any rug.
Then get into the loft above it and look for nesting material, feathers, a dead bird and stored wool. Dealing with that is what stops the annual recurrence. Treatment is £180 for the first room and £60 for each additional one, and it reaches the edges, the underlay and the storage that cleaning does not.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does cleaning not work?
It reaches the surface. The larvae are in the underlay, under the gripper, under furniture and inside storage.
Why every year at the same time?
Emergence is seasonal, and a source in the roof space produces a new batch each spring.
Where should I look if it keeps coming back?
The loft above the room where the adults appear — bird nests, feathers, old wool.
