Carpet Beetle Control · Bexley
How Can You Prevent Another Carpet Beetle Infestation?
By finding and removing the source, which is very often not in the room where you saw them. Carpet beetle prevention is mostly a roof and storage job.
Deal With the Roof Space First
This is where recurring beetle problems come from more often than anywhere else. A bird’s nest in the eaves, a dead bird in a soffit or a boarded flue, or a loft holding old wool, feathers, blankets and bedding — each produces larvae indefinitely.
Go up and look. Remove old nesting material and dead birds, clear stored wool and feather items or seal them into containers, and get the eaves and soffit gaps closed so birds cannot nest there again. Doing that is what stops the annual April crop on the windowsills.
Then Storage Discipline
Wash or dry-clean woollens before storing them, every time. Store in sealed plastic containers rather than cardboard boxes, open shelves or suit carriers. Do not put anything away soiled, and do not leave a box of jumpers under a bed for two years untouched.
Take stored textiles out and look at them twice a year. That is also when to vacuum wardrobe floors and the backs of drawers, which are where larvae actually sit.

The Vacuuming That Matters
Room edges over the gripper, under and behind furniture, wardrobe floors, drawer backs, under beds, and under any rug. Not the middle of the carpet, which is not where they are.
Also worth doing: the fluff that accumulates under beds and behind radiators, and anything containing animal hair. Empty the cylinder into a sealed bag and put it outside — an old vacuum bag left in a cupboard is itself a food source.
Check the Things Nobody Checks
Sheepskin and hide rugs, from the underside. Feather cushions and duvets. Wool blankets in an airing cupboard. Felt pads under furniture. Taxidermy. Piano felts. An unused fireplace or boarded flue. And old felt or hair carpet underlay, which is keratin and is often where the population lives.
Any one of those can maintain a population indefinitely while the room around it looks immaculate, which is why cleaning alone never seems to finish it.
And Watch the Windowsills
They are the early warning system. Adults heading for the light in spring means larvae in that room or directly above it, and it gives you a specific place to search before any damage shows.
If it happens two springs running in the same room, the source is almost certainly above the ceiling. Treatment is £180 for the first room and £60 for each additional one, and it reaches the edges, the underlay and the storage — but it is the source that decides whether it comes back.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where does a recurring problem usually come from?
The roof space — a bird nest, a dead bird, or stored wool and feathers.
How should I store woollens?
Washed, and in sealed containers rather than cardboard or open shelves.
What is the earliest warning sign?
Adults on a windowsill in spring. It tells you which room the larvae are in or below.
